FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

(Charleston, IL) – The second round of the Midwest Street Stock Championship rolled into Charleston Speedway Saturday night for the Stock Car Shootout Presented by Wildgraphix. Jeremy Nichols of Lovington, IL came into the evening with the Series points lead after his win a week ago at Macon Speedway in the Dean Garland Classic, but twenty other competitors that entered the event Saturday night had their eyes set on the $1,000 top prize and to gain on Nichols in the season long point hunt.

The evening started off with HP Machine qualifying. Same as last week at Macon, Jeremy Nichols set overall quick time with a lap of 15.13 seconds. In RacingBids.com Heat Race one, Josh Griffith held off Jason Maier for the win. Heat Race two brought to you by STL Motorsport Magazine went to Michael Clark out of Merrilville, IN. Dynamic Drivelines Heat Race three went to Jeremy Nichols.

The top two finishers from each heat stopped on the front stretch to draw and see who would start where in the JAZ Products Dash. It was Charleston, IL driver and four time track champion Josh Griffith that drew the number one for the start of the dash. Josh was able to keep the rest of the field behind him and cruise to the five lap dash victory. Thomasboro, IL Jason Maier finished second and joined Griffith on the front row for the thirty lap feature paying $1,000 to win.

Prior to the start of the feature event all the cars were brought on the front stretch to a stop and engines shut off. It was during this time that MSSC officials read a statement about a fellow Street Stock racer Brain Dasenbrock from the Decatur, IL area. Earlier in the evening Brain had been involved in a bad wreck at Peoria Speedway and transported to local hospital. A moment of silence was announced as fellow competitors and fans said prayers from the Dasenbrock family.

The crowd helped give the command to fire the engines and the field rolled around the speedway for pace laps. As the green flag dropped the cars drove off into turn one and calamity struck as the pole sitter Josh Griffith spun around went off the track. After going off the track Josh car rolled twice and left him on his top as several other cars spun as well. The race was red flagged as safety officials raced to the upside down machine of Griffith. Josh got out of his car and was OK.

This put Jason Maier in control of the field on a complete restart minus the 97 machine of Josh Griffith. On the restart Jason jumped out to an early lead. There were several cautions in the first few laps as Michael Clark tried to mount a charge on Maier. Jeremy Nichols brought out a caution on lap four after an accordion effect in turn two got the front runners bottled up and Nichols spun to the infield. This put the point leader Jeremy Nichols to the back of the field with 26 laps to go.

Maier continued to hold off the field towards the middle of the race as drivers Terry Reed and Darrell Dick mounted challenges but could not get around the 99 car of Maier. Jeremy Nichols moved his way through the field as the laps clicked off. Thanks to a couple of cautions in the middle of the race allowing Jeremy to join the leaders. On the last restart Nichols and Jerrad Krick both got along side of Jason Maier trying to get by on the inside. Jason powered to the outside and held off Nichols and Krick to pick up the $1,000 payday.

It was the first win of the season for Jason and first career MSSC victory. After early race struggles Jeremy Nichols came home second and last year’s defending MSSC Champion Jerrad Krick came home third. Darrell Dick and Michael Clark rounded out the top five.

Jason Maier would also take home Side Bite Designs and Race Wraps Rookie of the Race honors and Darrel Dick was the Saldana Racing Products Hard Charger of the race, advancing seven positions from his eleventh place starting position.

Next week the Midwest Street Stock Championship moves to Lincoln Speedway for the Second Annual Railsplitter 40 on Friday June 1st. Last year Jeremy Nichols won the inaugural Railsplitter 40 and will carry the points lead into the event.
