FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

(Joliet, IL) – The Midwest Street Stock Championship made its first visit to The Dirt Oval at Route 66 on Saturday night but it was a familiar face that would grace victory lane at the end of the night.

Temperatures soared and were in the mid 90’s as HP Machine Qualifying took to the track. Fifteen UMP Stock Cars made their way onto the 4/10 mile oval and it was Bourbonnais, IL driver Matt Hammond that came out on top. Matt turned a lap of 19.947 seconds, averaging 72.19 miles per hour in the process.

Wilmington, IL driver Joe Brown would grab the pole for RacingBids.com Heat Race 1 and would lead flag-to-flag to take the win over MSSC drivers Jeremy Nichols and Josh Griffith. In STL Motorsport Magazine Heat Race 2, Matt Hammond continued his successful evening taking the win. He was followed to the checkers by 2017 MSSC Champion Jerrad Krick and Robert Cottom.

It was more of the same in the JAZ Products Dash as Matt Hammond was able to get out front and hold off the fastest cars of the night to pick up the win. Joe Brown came home in the second spot followed by series point leader Jeremy Nichols.

Matt Hammond lead the inaugural Chicagoland 20 field to the green flag and picked up right where he left off by taking the lead. Second place starter Joe Brown made it tough for Hammond and was able to get by for the lead before the conclusion of lap one. Brown would hold on to the lead until a caution involving Rudy Zaragoza and Justin Hamm brought out the caution on lap 6. In a separate incident on the same lap, Side Bite Designs and Race Wraps Rookie of the Year contender Megan Erwin made contact with Tyler Sweat, ending her night early.

On the restart, MSSC point leader Jeremy Nichols made on move to the outside on leader Joe Brown on the backstretch and was able to take the lead and never looked back, coasting to a 5.546 second victory. In the closing laps, Charleston, IL driver Josh Griffith moved himself into the runner up position and Jerrad Krick rounded out the podium.

It was the third win of the season for Nichols in four MSSC races this year. After early race problems, Rudy Zaragoza rebounded to finish fifth, picking up Saldana Racing Products Hard Charger honors in the process after advancing from his fourteenth place starting spot. Wayne Huffman III came home seventh and was the Side Bite Designs and Race Wraps Rookie of the Race.

The Midwest Street Stock Championship will be back in action on July 14th at Peoria Speedway in Peoria, Illinois for the first running of the Dirty 30. The following weekend, the MSSC will compete on the opening night of the Champaign County Fair in the Chambana 40 on Friday July 20th alongside the POWRi WAR Sprint Cars.
